As always, we’re going to be quite limited in our spending power this summer so it’s crucial that Jon Whitney uses his budget correctly this summer. We’ve taken a look at 5 players who could be on the radar this summer…

Mark Little

A bit ambitious this, but if we’re looking for another marauder like Demetriou or McCarthy then Little is ready made. Will most likely end up at a higher placed League One team or a struggling Championship outfit, though.

Sam Foley

Port Vale are yet to announce their retained list, but are likely to offer 30 year old Foley another contract. Foley impressed during Vale’s relegation season despite a nasty injury and would provide energy and experience in the heart of midfield. His age may put Whitney off, however.

Tom Thorpe

Released by Rotherham, the former Manchester United starlet would fit the bill in terms of a player about to enter his prime that needs a bit of guidance. Can play in a number of positions and it would be interesting to see if Whitney could get his career back on track.

Jon McLaughlin

Widely speculated online as a target for Neil Cutler’s next two year project, the former Burton stopper is approaching his prime years as a ‘keeper so it might be difficult for Big Cuts to work his magic, but I wouldn’t put it past him trying. Would very much be a coup for Whitney and an excellent, ready made replacement for Etheridge.

Dean Bowditch

Another experienced head, and at 30 might be over hill but presents a decent option on a free for Whitney. Can play across the forward positions and has Championship experience, Bowditch also scored against Walsall earlier in the season during a 1-1 draw. Might not be an inspiring choice, but could be one that works out…
