Boss Says Signing Of Martin Is A “Massive Coup” For The Club

|

Walsall boss Dean Keates was today beaming with pride following the arrival of former Norwich City captain Russell Martin on a one year deal.

Keates admitted that signing Martin was a “massive coup” for the club and his experience will be vital to the younger players within the dressing room.

Martin signed a one year deal as a player coach and Keates believes it was a case of being patient and waiting for his man.

Speaking to the Official Site, Keates said

“It’s a massive coup for us. He’s someone I know from being in the changing room and playing with him for three years down at Peterborough.

“We’ve remained in touch ever since and it was always a case of just waiting and waiting. It’s been a drawn-out process but eventually we’ve got to where we want to be.

“He’ll bring leadership. He captained a club from League One up into the Premier League and worked his way up to become an established international.

“To add that experience to the young group we’ve got is massive. He’ll help with the back four and be an example to the younger lads.”

Martin has won promotion from League 1 on two occasions, the first with Peterborough before winning back to back promotions with Norwich City and captained them in the Premier League.

He has played over twenty games for the Scottish national team and will be a valuable member of the squad.
