Walsall boss Dean Smith has today confirmed the future of skipper Andy Butler will be decided sooner rather than later.

Butler, who has a one year extended option on his current deal has become a Walsall legend following his desire and determination to win over the past four years with the club – his goal at the Molineux took him from legend status to a god.

Smith told the Express and Star Andy Butler`s situation won`t drag on’, “I know that for a fact. I know the sort of lad that Andy is and he will be honest one way or another.

“We all hope that he stays and he knows that. He`s been pivotal in my teams throughout my tenure here and hopefully that can continue’

Smith continued “It will be a tough decision for him either way,” said Smith. “I believe he would like to stay but he`s got to weigh up his options and that will be nothing to do with the ambitions of the football club because he knows how ambitious we are and how we want to finish in the play-offs at least’

To lose Andy Butler and Andy Taylor from a defence which shipped in the fifth lowest amount of goals in League 1 is a worry but if it happens then we all have to support Deano to find adequate replacements.

Its a nervous few days at WS1.
