Darren Byfield has shown support for Jonny Brain, after a string of mistakes in the defeat at Rochdale.

The 33 year old striker, who scored at the weekend to the delight of fans, says that Brain shouldn’t feel so bad and he still has a job to save the Saddlers this season.

Byfield said that (Brain) repeatedly blamed himself for the defeat, but the players told him to forget about it and move on.

Byfield told the Express and Star: ‘”He was blaming himself at the end of the game, he kept saying it over and over and the lads told him to just leave it, as he`ll save us again this season’

The striker likened Brain’s dilemma to his own misses at goal in the defeat to Colchester. “Last weekend I missed three chances but that`s the end of it, people don`t go on about it – while Jonny`s going to get a bit of stick.’ He added

Byfield was estatic to hit the net on Saturday, after he could of got booked for a tackle in the build up.

‘It was an angry strike, we had just conceded and were 2-1 down. I`d lost the ball, ran around trying to win it back – I was either going to get booked for a tackle or I was just going to absolutely hit it and thankfully it went in.’ He told the Express and Star.

Looking back on the defeats and the season ahead, the captain is hopeful that a Saddler victory is just around the corner.

Any Saddler fan that has attended all the games, has seen a progression in the playing quality of Walsall, and that makes the defeats all the more frustrating.

Byfield concluded ‘We`ve lost four in a row but you have to look at the performances – if we had played like we did against Milton Keynes Dons and got beaten then OK, but we played well and were unlucky.’

Byfield makes sense in what he is saying, but, as the football saying goes ‘You are only as good as your last game.’
