The slightly farcical draw for the 2017/18 Carabao Cup, was made today from Bangkok, Thailand. Emmanuel Petit was one of the bizarre guests for the draw, which included executives from the new sponsors and the EFL.

Whilst these types of draws are usually quite benign occasions, this one did at least have a bit of comedy, with the sound on the live feed dropping out for a considerable time and Charlton Athletic being drawn to play against two different teams on the same night.

Putting that aside, the Carabao Cup represents a decent chance for lower league sides to get a money-spinning tie early in the season. Of course, we sampled this ourselves in 2015 when Jose Mourinho’s Chelsea side rolled into town and a whole load of new Saddlers ‘fans’ got a chance to buy their half and half scarves and jump firmly on the bandwagon.

This year’s competition will begin with a trip to Sheffield United on the week commencing Monday 7 August. The Saddlers enjoyed success against Chris Wilder’s title winning side last season, beating the Blades twice in the league and also in the Checkatrade Trophy.

Jon Whitney will be hoping for a similar result in what will be a testing fixture early in the new season. Oh, and we don’t have Neil Etheridge to save us this time at the Lane…
