Whilst Rovers manager has been praising player coach Jason McAteer for his performances over the last few games, it is the forward line that attracts my attention. In recent games Calvin Zola’s powerful play has proved to be the perfect foil for Chris Greenacre. Chris has scored in both of Tranmere’s last two games. Breaking his nine game barren spell in the 2-1 win at Swindon and then scoring in the 4-1 home rout of Chesterfield. This brings Chris Greenacres tally to 16 goals this season, a good return considering Tranmere’s poor start to the season. However Chris has been inconsistent with goals coming in fits and spurts suffering from a seven and nine game barren spells.

Born in Wakefield Chris started out with Manchester City spending five seasons at Main road. He was loaned out to Cardiff, Blackpool and Scarborough before a loan move to Mansfield was turned into a permanent deal on 21-01-2000. During his time at Mansfield, which ended in the summer of 2002, Chris’s goal scoring record of 44 goals in 110 games brought him national attention. Out of contract in that summer finally brought him a chance of Championship football with Stoke City. Only 44 starts and 31 bench appearances was disappointing it also brought only 7 goals. Out of contract again a number of clubs chased his signature, Walsall been one of them but the belief that Tranmere would return to the Championship soon encouraged Chris to sign a two year deal on 13th July 2005.

That spell at Stoke hit his goals per game return, giving him an average of 0.28 goals per games. This season to date Chris has hit 16 goals in his 40 appearances in league and cups, picking up two yellow cards. He has hit only one hat trick in the 4-1 home win over Yeovil. However he seems to be a lucky omen to Tranmere when Chris scores Tranmere have only lost once (against Bradford). So let’s home we can keep him quite as we did at Bescot.
