Dean Smith had a stroke of luck with captain fantastic Andy Butler who has been the man for the job in the defence and at the heart of their league one survival.

But now he is tipping the 32 year old for more success.

He told the Express and Star: “What he`s got to do is live up to the expectation. He was fantastic last season and knew what was expected of him week in, week out but I think Andy demands that of himself anyway.’ Reflecting Butler’s steely determination and drive.

Butler brought much calm and influence to an inconsistent back four and Smith hopes that it will only improve next season.

‘The spine of the team is massively important. With Macken extending, Andy Butler and Oliver Lancashire signed up and hopefully Jimmy Walker not being too far behind, we`re building that spine up.” Smith added.

Butler signed a 2 year deal and is moving closer to the Banks’s with his family.

It’s great to have my future sorted out, i’ve loved every minute of my time at Walsall, the fans took to me straight away and to captain the side has been a real honour.’ He boasted on signing the deal earlier this month.

Let’s go, Andy Butler is a firm fans favourite!
