Defence taking shape

Well that was a bit out of the blue. With the three previous signings made this summer by Jon Whitney, a significant amount of speculation had preceded the announcement. However, this time there’s was hardly any inclination that Devlin would be the man signing his name on the dotted line today.

Devlin himself is a right-back, who follows Luke Leahy south from the Scottish Football League, and has penned a two-year deal at the Banks’s. At 23 years old, and a captain at his previous club, Devlin seems exactly the kind of character and profile that you would expect from a Jon Whitney signing.

Whitney seems to have most of his defence in place for the season now, with Devlin, Leahy, Jon Guthrie and Mark Gillespie all through the door. Matt Preston should sign a new contract within the next few days and along with a number of younger players, the Saddlers looked well stocked in that area.

Whether it’s a 4 or 5 man back-line, the options seem to be in place now, and we should start to see some more attack minded players join the ranks in the coming weeks.

What do you make of the recruitment so far this summer?
