Desire?

It was a frustrating day for the Saddlers as they came away from a poor Hereford United team without two valuable points and few pluses on a grim October day. Walsall for the first time in a long while started the game as favourites but they seemed unwilling to live up to the tag.

Hereford in the stewardship of Graham Turner proved a determined, organised outfit but were sorely lacking in ability. It was a performance that left Walsall fans questioning the desire of the team to take the three points which would have left the Saddlers joint second.

Hereford included former Saddler Kris Taylor in midfield but were absent of recent Walsall trialist Nick Chadwick. It was if the team felt that all they had to do was turn up to take the three points. Herefore are an honest team and they clearly set themselves up from the start to stifle Walsall’s game and keep things tight. Previously they had held Leeds United for the majority of ninety minutes the previous week.

If Walsall would have scored they would have won the game at a canter and Graham Turner will have achieved a miracle if he manages to keep his strugglers in the divison. Walsall were just devoid of ideas in the final third, their wing play was poor, set piece delievery was dire and far too often they were resorted to thumping the ball long to Ricketts and Ibhere.

The only notable chance fell to Ricketts who flashed his shot wide on the stroke of half time. Nicholls had already missed to half chances when he should have done better. With the Walsall fans expecting a more determinedly attacking team in the second half they were left sorely dissappointing. They were even more disappointing and the homeside were growing more and more in confidence. Some Bulls fans will claim they should have won the game as Boertian cleared off the line an N-Gotty header and Williams flashed his header just wide. Though Dwayne Mattis should have done far better with a free header he had down the other end.

With their desire to win the match in question it will be interesting to see how they Saddlers perform when they go into Tuesday’s match againist Cheltenham as favourites.
