Despite Transfer Window Closure We Look At Possible Transfer Targets We Could Sign

|

Manager Dean Keates has confirmed this week that he is hoping to land a player currently unattached. Current transfer rules mean the Saddlers can sign any player outside of the transfer window who was released before last Friday’s transfer deadline.

Keates confirmed he held discussions with the mystery player and is hoping that a deal can be agreed (story here Keates Targets Unattached Player )

We take a look at some possible transfer targets that could be on Dean Keates radar (note this a guess and not to be taken seriously).

Defenders

Scott Golbourne (Left Back)  – Golbourne has been without a club since he was released from Bristol City during the summer. He has links to the Midlands having played for near neighbours Wolves. Left back is still a position we are light in with experience with only Luke Leahy who has played regular first team football. It remains to be seen whether we could afford Scott’s wages and would he want to come here to play second fiddle to Leahy? Probably not.

Nathan Cameron (Centre Back) – Zeli Ismail hinted on his instagram page during the summer that Cameron should come and join him at Walsall. The former Bury defender has been without a club since June when his contract with the Shakers was terminated. Cameron does have issues surrounding his fitness having missed most of the last two years through injury. Should he regain his fitness then he would be a much welcomed addition to the squad.

Russell Martin (Centre Back) – Martin is a very interesting suggestion made on our Twitter pages over the last couple of days. He was released by Norwich just before the transfer window closed and did in fact play with current boss Dean Keates at Peterborough. Martin was Norwich club captain and would add much needed experience to the back line. He spent most of last season on loan at Glasgow Rangers. Doubt we could get anywhere near his wages though.

Midfielders

Chris Humphrey (Wing Back/Winger) – Humphrey started his career in the youth team here before joining WBA in 2004. He has had an established career in England and Scotland. Humphrey was released bu Bury in the summer and at the age of 30 he may wish to reignite his career at the club that gave him his opportunity in football. The Saddlers already have adequate cover in this area but some still wished for an attacking minded player on deadline day. New loan signing Ronan will occupy more of an Oztumer like position.

Mark Davies (Central Midfield) – Davies was born in Willenhall and played for Wolves in his early days before moving onto Leicester and Bolton. Davies has unfortunately been plagued with a bad injury since he left Bolton and it remains to be seen whether he will play football again. Although at just the age of 30 he would be a superb signing for any League 1 club should he recover from his injury.

Strikers

Cody McDonald (Striker) – I am still surprised he hasn’t found a club since leaving AFC Wimbledon during the summer. McDonald is a handful for any defenders in League 1 and many will be trying to sign the free agent. McDonald has scored fifty-eight goals in two-hundred games in League 1.

Nicky Maynard (Striker) – Maynard has been without a club since leaving Aberdeen during the summer. Maynard is no stranger to League 1 having scored thirty-three goals in eighty games at this level. You would imagine Maynard would require a hefty wage packet given his career but he wouldn’t have earned too much at Aberdeen and a route back into English football might not be out the question.
