Double boost for the Saddlers

The Saddlers got energised this week with some team bonding, and are further uplifted today by the signatures of loanee striker Jason Price and the contract extension of goalkeeper Jimmy Walker.

Walker’s contract was due to expire after tomorrow’s home game against Bristol Rovers, but he has decided to stay until the end of the season at least. As reported in the Express and Star, the 37 year old had been involved at Tottenham Hotspur but has chosen to now focus all his attentions to the Walsall’s fight for survival in league one.

Manager Dean Smith told the Express and Star: ‘Wacka brings a calmness and assuredness and I`m pleased to have tied him down. He`s a great shot-stopper and a very good goalkeeper.’

The Saddlers have been crying out to strengthen up front, after it has been left threadbare following the departures Troy Deeney, Reuben Reid and the injury to Darren Byfield. 33 year old Jason Price has signed for one month. Price has experience of 15 years, scoring 27 goals and his greatest accomplishments include back to back promotions with Hull City and promotion to the Championship with Doncaster Rovers. He joins from Carlisle United after playing for Bradford City on loan in late 2010.

Of his arrival, Price told BBC Sport:”(Walsall) are playing good football but they cannot score. It is a decent club to come into.”

Price is not far wrong of the shot shy Saddlers and his arrival is much needed. This season, the current, available front-men (Nicholls, Grigg, Macken) have scored just 8 goals and the top scorer comes from central midfielder Matthew Richards, who has scored 7 (one shy of the strikers total!) of the 32 goal total this season.

The duo will hopefully go into tomorrow’s clash against Bristol Rovers. Good luck to them both!
