Former Birmingham City, WBA and Aston Villa striker Kevin Phillips has emerged as favourite to take over from Michael Flynn as new Walsall Head Coach.

ReluctantNicko (Alan Nixon) on Twitter has confirmed that Walsall have identified former England striker Kevin Phillips as a prospective new manager and now his odds have gone into 4/5 with BetVictor.

Phillips who had an amazing career as a player has very limited managerial experience having managed ninth tier South Shields. Despite having a bigger budget than most, South Shields missed out on promotion in their first season but did win the league last week. Following winning the league Phillips said he was leaving the club.

Aswell as managing South Shields Phillips has also been assistant manager at Leicester, Derby and Stoke.

This feels very much like Dean Keates and Matt Taylor territory – and we know how both those turned out.
