Former Saddlers captain Dean Smith has made a surprise return to the club as the new Head of Youth, a position that was vacated when Mick Halsall moved to Wolves earlier this month.

The 38-year-old has signed a three-year contract, and Bonser believes that Smith has the leadership qualities to suceed in the position.

Smith made his debut for the Saddlers as a player in 1989 and made 166 appearances before leaving the club in 1994 to sign for Hereford.

He became the Saddlers youngest ever captain at the age of 19 and in my opinion will prove to be a decent appointment as he will not be anywhere near as good as Mick was, but he has passion for the club and that can prove to be an important quality.

Welcome back Deano!
