Rene Gilmartin has officially left Walsall and joined Watford for an undisclosed fee. The Saddlers will however be entitled to some compensation as he is under 24 years old.

The keeper, who played a significant part in a decent end of a season run for the Saddler’s, is fighting out with Watford keeper Scott Loach for the number one spot for the Hornets.

Saddlers boss Chris Hutchings told the express and Star: ‘”It`s something he has to get round and i`m sure he`ll be willing to fight for his place, as he has done here after a number of years of being told by previous managers he was number two to Clayton Ince.’

Gilmartin is a suprise exit for the Saddler’s after being made 1st choice keeper after five years at the club and Clayton Ince’s retirement. Walsall will now have to move to get a new keeper to be a no2 to new signing Jonny Brain.

Rumours have also abound today that former Bristol Rover’s defender is interesting the Saddlers and will join the them in pre season training, which resumed today. The defender is a free agent after being released by the Robins last season.
