Paul Boertien has said that the appointment of Chris Hutchings prevented him from leaving the club and he convinced him to sign a new deal.

The defender, who was out of contract with Walsall, has now signed a new deal to see him through until the summer but had Hutchings not arrived then Boertien might not have been with the club now: ‘My contract was up and I didn’t know what was going to happen,’ Boertien told BBC WM. ‘The gaffer came in and wanted me to stay and played a big part in that.’

The 30-year-old has admitted that he had concerns over getting a new deal, something that he didn’t think would be coming until the new managers arrivals, adding: ‘It looked like nothing was going to happen for whatever reason. I wanted to stay and the club didn’t seem to be sorting anything out.

‘But the new gaffer wanted me and spoke to the chairman and I’ve managed to stay and that’s good.

Boertien joined Walsall from Derby in the summer of 2007 when the Championship outfit released him.

Are you happy that Paul Boertien stayed with Walsall, and do you think that he will stay even longer?
