Walsall have today announced that interim first team boss Jon Whitney has become first team manager on a three year deal.

Whitney took over first team affairs last season following the sacking of Sean O’Driscoll and went onto win eight of his fourteen games in charge and steered the Saddlers to a League 1 play-off place.

The Saddlers missed out on automatic promotion by one point and went on to lose 6-1 on aggregate against Barnsley in the League 1 play off semi-final.

Whitney has been with the club thirteen years and obviously knows the club inside and out – it remains whether to be seen if he has the tactical nous for a permanent position but it worked employing Smith from within so we just have to back the board and their decision.

Everyone at Vital Walsall wishes to congratulate Jon on the position and wish him the best of luck for the new season
