Deep in the archives ther are plenty of information on Walsall’s last recruit…Scot Fitzgerald, plucked from non league football by Watford. He hit a rich vain of goalscoring form which led him as been hearlded as the next Micheal Owen. At this time Scott did an interview with 4-4-2 magazine, so lets look at some of the things he said.
Striker, born in Hillingdon 18th November 1979,nickname Fitzy.
Club supported ‘I used to follow Liverpool, mainly because they were the top team when I was really young, when Ian Rush was scoring the goals. I would watch them when they came to London, but I also used to go and watch Spurs because they were more local.’

Strengths ‘I’d like to think it’s my ability to score goals. To have scored 11 goals in my first full season at Watford was really encouraging, and I’ve managed to carry on the form I showed for Northwood in the Ryman League. Mind you, I’ve always scored goals, since I was a kid’.However of date the goalscoring exploits have disappeared resulting in a move to Brentford and now us on loan.

Weaknesses ‘Having made the step up from Ryman League, there are plenty of things that I need to work on. The game is far more technical at this level and the movement of players off the ball is completely different. Those are the two areas I need to work on most.’
‘I play a bit like Michael Owen. I’m nowhere near his level but I like to get behind defenders like him and I’ve always relied on my pace.’ In the games so far this pace has not been evident and it begs the question whether injury has robbed him of this asset or recent years has jusy stolen his confidence.

In five years time I’ll be Playing Premiership and international football. As my mum’s Irish, I’d like to represent the Republic one day and although I haven’t spoken to Brian Kerr, I’ve heard that there could be a ‘B’ side in the pipeline, which might set the ball rolling for me. Such high expectations which have nowhere near been fulfilled, Scott is going through a low point in his career. He had hoped that the move to Brentford would reignite his fortunes. But with DJ Campbell, Rankin, and Lloyd Owusu ahead of him things just didn’t work out.
To date Scott hasn’t really seen the ball enough in the danger areas to prove his goal touch. Like the majority of our strikers he has suffered from poor service. But looking at his track record he scores one in every two to three games, it is the lack of appearences that has prevented him from scoring more.
The evidence suggests he is more of a penalty box player and perhaps we should not expect to much in the build up and general play, is this a luxary we cannot afford, or will the goals come and he will keep us up, only time will tell.
