Jorge’s Jottings-The striker options

Since Jorge himself and Matty Fryatt left the Bescot scene goals have been hard to come by. In recent weeks the term Walsall-nil has almost become our new name.

Boss Kevan Broadhurst has tried to bring in a new striker and as disclosed first on this site MK Dons striker Aaron Wilbraham was high on the list, only for MK Dons to refuse premission for him to join us but instead letting him go to Bradford. So what if the only choice is from within our own ranks.

Mads Timm- undoubtable talent, but his fancy flicks sometimes find opposition players instead of a saddler. Could not be described as prolific goalscorer, but is certainly someone who could create a goal. In fact a number of goals scorered before his injury were created by him. More performances such as against Chesterfield would add the creative flair we are missing.

Scot Fitzgerald- Some fans whilst willing to give the new boy a chance have been frustrated at what they have seen so far. Been accused of been lazy disinterested and slow is not the Scot fitzgerald we signed. It would appear that Scot is more of a penalty box player, so whilst not creating chances and been starved of service we have not seen the best of him yet.

Andrew Barrowman- a prospect signed from Blues, he has struggled to adapt to league football have previously been used to reserve team football. At Southend him and Scot Fitzgerald wanted to be in the same position, suggesting that they may not make a strike partnership. Again his goalscoring and performance record at Blues suggest he will come good but will it be this season or next.

James Constable- a bargin for 5k, but like Barowman has not yet come to grips with league football. His performances have either been good or bad, never just ok. He has also shown he knows where the net is. It seems a lot to ask for one so inexperienced to score the goals to keep us up.

Paul Devlin- signed by Paul Merson to play across the front line. So far played wekk for 43mins at Chesterfield before injury and then for 60minutes before been sent off. Historically more of a winger than a striker but his record suggests he could do a job for us.

Kevin James- Again a winger who has scored whilst playing up front, linked well with Devlin at Chesterfield. His main asset is pace which can unsettle any defence. His head does seem to drop though, especially if he isn’t getting the right type of service for his type of game.

Taiwo Atieno- Branded by Paul Merson as not good enough,despite a good start at a loan spell with Kidderminster. Finishing this spell on the bench did nothing for Taiwo’s confidence, but has always given 100% and is perhaps the strongest of all our options in the air. We found out at Brentford he can’t play wide.

So we have options, but for me if we are to carry any real goal threat we need to play two wingers,for me any two out the four, Wright,James,Delvin and Demontagnac. I would go for James and Devlin due to experience personally. Whilst the front two would be hard to pick, but if Fitzy can finish as he has shown for other clubs he would combine well with the creativity of Mads Timm. This would mean we need to get the ball down and wide. Any long balls up the centre would come straight back, but what do you think.
