Keates Misses Out On Transfer Target

|

Walsall boss Dean Keates has today confirmed he missed out on a defensive transfer target after the player decided to go elsewhere in League 1.

Keates has also confirmed he wants to replace the outgoing Russell Martin with another experienced pro but conceded that anyone with experience will cost a lot more than the going rate.

It remains to be seen whether he can finance a deal for an experienced centre half with the obvious financial constraints placed upon him.

This weekend Keates has lost Russell Martin and Jack Fitzwater leaving him with just Conor Johnson and Jon Guthrie in the heart of a fragile defence and its clear to see that experience is needed.

Speaking to the Express and Star, Keates said

“If we can add experience, we will – but with experience comes quite a big price tag”.

“I made phone calls all last week and we were a bit unfortunate not to add the ones that we wanted.”

“There’s been a few niggles going around other football clubs so more players will become available this week.

“We also missed out on a centre-half. He chose to go somewhere else in the division.”

Keates really has no chance of building a side capable of challenging has he? This is the fourth target he has missed out on due to the financial burden placed upon him by the hierarchy of the club.
