Walsall struggled through into the third round of the FA cup to set up a tie against Milwall. But this was one of the worst performance of the season and will act as a real wake call for the visit of Leeds United on saturday. From start to finish the Saddlers struggled, looking laboured and empty of ideas. But the back four were resolute and determined not to be beaten.

Northampton for their part looked lightweight with the absence of prolific striker Andy Kirk. They missed numerous half opportunites and should have really taken the lead just before half time. Lanky striker Hubertz header was cleared off the line by Rhys Weston. Walsall were irritated into their first chance of the half, Michael Ricketts cross cum shot was saved Hollywood style by Mark Bunn.

The second half didn’t get much better for the Saddlers as Ismael Demontagnac replaced the poor Eddy Sonko. But soon the surge forward from the Saddlers fizzled out with numerous misplaced passes and this was soon replicated by the away side. It was like watching two lightweight boxers unable to land the knockout punch. Both sets of fans were fearing extra time and penalties but the match was resolved five minutes from time.

Michael Ricketts clever pass went into the path of Demontagnac who raced into the box but he was tumbled over by midgit defender Danny Jackman. With Mooney off the pitch, Michael Ricketts stepped and fired the Saddkers through.
