Leeds have closed their points gap to minus nine after an emphatic victory over fellow relegated side Southend.
United had new signings Alan Thompson and Torre Andre Flo put their names on the scoresheet as the Yorkshire side went on a scoring romp to complete the much-needed victory.
Elsewhere, title favourites Nottingham Forest failed to beat Swansea at the Liberty Stadium, as Walsall went down 1-0 away at Leyton Orient.
