Broken Walsall are desperately trying to put the pieces this season back together by resigning Saddler goalkeeping legend Jimmy Walker today.
Walker, 37, has signed until January next year to replace Jonny Brain, who has lacked consistency since signing in the summer from Macclesfield.
The shot stopper has played for West Ham United and Tottenham Hotspur since his ten years at the Bescot Stadium between 1993/1994 and 2003/2004,where he earned himself 475 appearances and a well deserved testimonial.
A fans favourite and affectionately known as Wacka, Walker endured both happy and sad times at the Bescot Stadium, promoted to today’s league one in 1995 and then the championship in 1999. They were then relegated and promoted in successive seasons, before being relegated once more to league one the season immediately before Walker’s departure.
Hutchings noted that the return of the Walsall legend was for his experience and knowledge from his time playing at higher level. He told the official website: ‘He had ten very successful years at the club and knows what we are all about. Since then he has worked alongside some top players and that higher level experience and know-how is sure to serve us well.’
Walker added that he is eager to get stuck in in front of the fans: ‘I can’t wait to play in front of the supporters again. They were always absolutely brilliant with me and now is the time for everyone to come together and start getting the club moving in the right direction.’
It is surprising to see a goalkeeper come in on loan, considering that Brain has recently escaped much of the criticism he endured at the beginning of the season. Walker will no doubt rejuvenate the frustrations and pull back in some of the stayaway fans from the Banks’s, which may just be the point of his return all along.
