After 45 days of waiting since the 4-1 final day defeat to MK Dons, Jon Whitney has completed his first signing of the summer by adding former Falkirk left- back, Luke Leahy to his ranks on a two-year deal following his release from the Scottish club.

Leahy has been widely linked with the Saddlers since Whitney’s scouting trip to Scotland last month, but Saddlers fans will be relieved to finally see the defender sign on the dotted line.

Despite plying his trade mainly in the left-back position, Leahy scored 12 goals in his 158 games for Falkirk and this ability at both ends of the pitch seem to have persuaded Whitney to pursue his signature.

Speaking to the Official Walsall FC website, Whitney said: “I`ve kept tabs on him and seen a few of his games – we watched him at both of Falkirk`s play-off games in May.

“He made a great impression on me and he is someone with great potential.

“Luke used to play left-wing and he`s an attacking full-back.”

That versatility will also come in handy as Whitney switched between a variety of formations last season that employed both wing-backs and traditional full-backs.

With the recent departure of Andreas Makris, this is welcome news for Saddlers fans and hopefully Leahy’s signature will be the start of increased transfer activity over the coming weeks.
