Very rarely do ‘stress free’ and ‘Walsall game’ come together in the same sentence, however having secured safety the previous weekend against Huddersfield, this is exactly what we had for our trip to Stadium MK.

Walsall fans were in jovial mood, in contrast to the MK fans who were very quiet as the final game of the League One season kicked off, with Walsall starting the brighter of the two.

The early stages neither side really threatened, MK having a couple of offside decisions given against them, and Emanuele Ledesma starting to ruffle a few feathers as usual, at one point going one v one with the opposition goalkeeper only to waste his chance.

Just 18 minutes in Walsall went into the lead, some good build up by Ledesma once again, feeding Will Grigg on a rare start, who calmly curled an effort past the opposition goalkeeper into the bottom corner.

Both teams were attempting to build chances with Walsall being clearly on top, causing MK to become increasingly frustrated as the half wore on.

Half Time: MK Dons 0 Walsall 1

The Saddlers began the final 45 minutes of their season well, Ledesma soon finding himself on the ball in the opposition box, but deciding to try too much and wasting the chance.

Again both teams were looking to take control but both defences looking strong, but both Lee Beevers and Jamie Paterson coming close to extending the Saddlers’ lead.

MK man Chadwick picked up an injury and had to come out of the game, but having made all of their allotted substitutions Dons found themselves down to ten men.

Dons almost seemed galvanised by going down to ten men and began to come into the game more, but the Walsall defence remaining very strong.

Ledesma again threatened but dribbled a shot poorly wide, before Manny Smith was unlucky to have a header cleared off the Dons’ goal line.

As the allotted five minutes of injury time whittled away, Walsall fans cheered and celebrated an unexpectedly easy end to another difficult League One season!
