Another name means another link to Walsall, which is quite flattering I suppose to some extent. This time it is in the form of former Blackpool defender Marlon Broomes, who is available on a free transfer.

The 31-year-old was released by the Tangerines at the end of last season and would prove to be a good signing if Hutch made him an offer.

He broke into the Blackburn first team in 1994, after Rover Premier League triumph and was seen as a future prospect, especially when he made his debut for the England under-21s in 1997.

However, Broomes wanted first team football and after loan spells with Swindon, QPR and Grimsby, he finally made a move to Sheffield Wednesday in 2001, where he only made 19 appearances before sealing a transfer to Preston in 2002.

After three seasons, he moved on to Stoke City in 2005 where he spent three more years and also playing a bit-part role in the Potters promotion to the Premiership in 2008.

He then moved to Blackpool, where he only made one appearance, which led to two loan spells at Crewe before his release this summer.

Also, the Saddlers have been rumoured to have offered a contract to the 23-year-old midfielder Michael Pook, who like Broomes is currently unattached to a club.

Pook, who was released by Swindonn earlier this summer, made 109 appearances in six years for the Robins, scoring three goals.

He is also known for controversy due to missing a game with no sufficient reason and then being arrested the next day for drink driving, which resulted in a 19-month ban from driving and a £300 fine.

Links also remain in relation to Hutch offering a trial to former Blues winger Peter Till, but news of the potential signing of striker Lee Hughes seems to have fallen through….for now!
