Released left-back Paul Boertien has admitted that his injury-plagued season may have cost him a new contract for next season.

In a season which saw mid-table obscurity hit the Banks’s Stadium like a tidal wave, one of the problems has been the lack of Boertien in his usual left-back slot due to a whole catalogue of injuries, which in turn has paved the way for youngster Nathan Sansara.

Boertien told the Express and Star: ‘I`d played 13 games in a row before I got my stomach injury and came back after two weeks, but he never seemed to want to play me after that.

“I`d enjoyed my two years and hoped to stay. The previous year I`d had a few injuries, but this season I`d been injury-free and was really enjoying it under the manager.”

Boertien’s release will be of great benefit to Chris Palmer, who filled in at left-back for the remainder of last season.

However, it remains to be seen whether Boertien’s release will impact Walsall next year.
