Neil Etheridge has agreed terms with Championship side Cardiff City, and will join the Bluebirds on July 1.

Etheridge is out of contract at Walsall and despite being offered a new three year deal, most Saddlers fans knew that Etheridge would be plying his trade elsewhere in 2017/18. Cardiff City seem a good fit, and with Neil Warnock in charge they will be expected to push towards the play-offs next season.

Etheridge leaves the Saddlers after two seasons. He joined in the summer of 2015 and immediately became Dean Smith’s number 1 for the 2015/16 season. Despite some nervy moments at the start of that season, he continued to improve under the guidance of Neil Cutler and is widely regarded as one of the best ‘keepers in League One. However, it was the start of this season which saw the best of Etheridge in a Walsall shirt and standout performances against Bolton at home and Sheffield United away really stick in the mind.

The focus for Jon Whitney and his coaching will now be fully focused (if it wasn’t already) on finding a new number 1 goalkeeper.
