Confirming the rumours from the past few days, experienced defender James O’Connor, will not be a part of Jon Whitney’s plans for the forthcoming season.

Speaking to the Express & Star Whitney explained the decision:

“I`ve been open and honest with Jimmy and I`ve told him I don`t see him playing many minutes for me with the way I want to play this season.

“A couple of weeks into pre-season, as a coaching staff, we felt we needed more of a physical presence at the back.

“Tactically, I wanted to try and get James Wilson and I mentioned to Jimmy he may not get many minutes because of that.’

It’s a huge call from Whitney and he is putting a lot of faith in new signings, Jon Guthrie and James Wilson. And, with only the currently unsigned Matt Preston and unproven Kory Roberts as back-up many fans are understandably unsure about Whitney’s judgement on this one.
