Former Walsall player and manager Paul Merson has today come out and backed under fire current Walsall manager Jon Whitney in an exclusive interview with Express and Star.

Merson told Express and Star Express and Star

“Hopefully Jon will turn it around,” the ex-Arsenal and Villa star said.

“It won`t be for a lack of trying believe me. And the fans should get behind him because he loves that football club. He really does.’

Merson who played sixty eight times for the Saddlers between 2003 and 2006 thinks Whitney will save the Saddlers from relegation despite the club being three points from the drop zone.

“I would be shocked if they went down with Jon in charge. He will give it absolutely everything.”

“You hear it`s hard times at Walsall but I think they are about where they should be in League One,” he continued. “Without being disrespectful, they operate on a small budget and they are a middle of the table League One team’

Merson was the manager of Walsall between 2004-2006 in which time the Saddlers were relegated from the now Championship and the following season survived relegation to League 2 following decent acquisitions on transfer deadline day.

Also Merson and Whitney can boast going out the cup to non league opposition although the defeat to Macclesfield last season wasn’t on the same level to our disastrous defeat to Slough under Merson.

Merson was sacked the following year with the Saddlers just two places below where we are now.

The Saddlers have a six pointer this weekend as fellow relegation candidates Gillingham come to the Banks’s Stadium.
