Players Are Not Doing Their Jobs – Keates

|

Walsall boss Dean Keates was annoyed this morning following the Saddlers 2-1 defeat against relegation rivals Plymouth Argyle last night.

The Saddlers had chances to get something from the game but Keates was not happy about the goals that the Saddlers conceded – both coming from free kicks.

Ryan Edwards opened the scoring just before the hour mark when he was left unmarked in the box from a Graham Carey free kick and Niall Canavan was also left with an easy header on sixty-five minutes from yet another Carey free kick.

Speaking to Express and Star, Keates said

“The work rate was there, the character was there, but it’s frustrating to concede from set pieces,”

“There are things we do for different set pieces. The lads are given a man before the game. If your man doesn’t score, you know you’ve done your job.”

“There were two set plays, and two players have scored.”

“It’s people not doing their jobs.”

Keates has already identified the defence as the main issue with his squad but despite signing Scott Laird and Dan Scarr both were an unused substitutes last night.

Following our 3-0 away victory against Gillingham it would have been harsh to drop any of the backline however given the season til now you just know that inconsistency is the issue with this squad.

We are a Jekyll and Hyde outfit. Something Keates needs to evaluate in the summer.

We should have enough to stay up – but with nine points separating 8th place and the drop zone its pretty much a toss of coin who fills those relegation places come May.
