Player’s salaries need to be capped – Weston

Rhys Weston has spoken about how he thinks player’s salaries will be capped in the future to help the financial crisis within football.

Top players with their £100,000 per week wages have seen financial difficulties for clubs, which has resulted in clubs like Southampton and Leeds being stuck in the third tier of English football.

Weston believes that a universal cap on salaries will help other clubs live the dream of reaching the top-flight without going into financial ruin by paying top wages.

Weston told the Birmingham Mail: ‘It was only a matter of time before the recession caught up with football.

“Some clubs defy economics with the amount of money they outlay in comparison to what they bring in and there has been talk of a salary cap for a while.

“I`ve heard things on the radio and in certain circles, and it`s something I could see happening because football clubs could drive themselves into oblivion.

“It`s one of the things which could put everything on an even keel.

“It wouldn`t be up to the players if you are outside the top two divisions, you have to take what you can get unless you are at a club with strong financial backing.

“Players don`t hold the cards any more and if it`s the route the clubs want to go down there is very little the players` union can do.”
