As preparations for the new season continue to take shape, Jon Whitney is looking forward to taking his side to Cumbria for a pre-season bonding trip.

Speaking to the Express & Star Whitney said:

“I was really keen to make sure we do it this year – so I pencilled us in quite early.”

“We`ll test the players physically and psychologically, which is the important bit, and we`ll be able to get a profile of each player as well.’

The Saddlers’ pre-season fixture schedule unofficallly got underway today as Whitney’s men beat a Kidderminster Harriers XI, with goals courtesy of Cameron Peters and Amadou Bakayoko. The first official pre-season fixture takes place on 15 July as Walsall make the short trip to National League side Solihull Moors.

Whitney also referenced his desire to have more ‘leaders’ in the team this season and a number of the activites will be designed to promote leadership.

“For me it`ll show us who has those leadership qualities going into the new season.

“It involves tough, tough challenges – but it`s fun.’
