Resiliance!

|

Yesterday, Walsall fought back from a losing position twice to draw. This sort of ‘mental strength’ has been talked about a lot, and it is starting to pay off.

All season, Darrell Clarke has spoken about how he wants his team and players to not be mentally weak. In the last few matches, Walsall have salvaged points from losing positions, something we were unable to do for most of 2019. So far in 2020, we have fought back to gain wins over Crawley and Northampton, and a draw against Vale. We are losing in the first place. which isn’t ideal, but the fact that the players aren’t letting heads drop, and are able to fight back is a step in the right direction.

We have had a run of games against teams above us, against teams that are in the mix for the play-offs, and we have held our own. We have shown that we are a team that has the potential to be mixing with those seeking promotion. This, obviously, makes the poor results against those teams near the bottom even more frustrating, given that points there would have seen us in a much better position when looking at the league table.

We have a test on Saturday. We play the football leagues worst form team in a match that we should (should) be getting a positive result. It will be a different sort of test for us, where we need to have a siege mentality, one that we don’t usually start a match with. After this, we have a March top and tailed with home matches against teams in the top 3. This, alongside games against teams below us in the league, will be an interesting set of matches, to see how consistent and resilient we really are.

Until then, I will enjoy another battling showing from the lads, and enjoy the fact that the team has sent home over 2300 Port Vale fans without 3 points to shout about.
