Walsall suffered their second biggest defeat under Jon Whitney and to be honest we expected it.
Rochdale had won eight games on the trot at home, scoring goals for fun and not conceding many so for a team with low morale going there and trying to compete was never going to happen.
Surprisingly Whitney kept the same side which buckled against Gillingham at the weekend, with notable substitutes James O’Connor and Amadou Bakayoko being the talk amongst the Saddlers faithful even before a ball had been kicked.
Now O’Connor has not had the best start this season but James O’Connor at 10% would get in the team over Kevin Toner – in Toners defence he is a left back so to shoe him into centre half just beggars belief.
Baka on the other hand was an in form striker – currently topping the CheckATrade Trophy leading goalscoring charts but was once again overlooked for Simeon Jackson, who hasnt scored since 1st October.
The Saddlers were absolutely trounced by a buoyant Rochdale side who could have won six or seven.
Adam Chambers had our only shot of the game – this came from twenty yards out which went wide…I could bore you with Rochdale attack after attack but lets not.
However the manner in which all four goals were scored was Sunday league stuff. Truly embarrassing.
A few months ago we called for Jon Whitney to step down with immediate effect, it didnt happen. If we are to save our season then the board need to act NOW. Lets not kid ourselves suggesting he is still ‘learning’ or ‘we gave Smith four years, he deserves a chance’ – the man simply isnt a football manager.
Jon Whitney is a great man, an approachable likeable guy and it hurts to see what is happening but this is our club and we cant let it suffer anymore for the sake of one man.
Over to you Jeff Bonser, Daniel Mole and Stefan Gamble.
