Walsall 8 Southport 0 21 November 1959

This win epitomised the 1959/60 season for us and the only major trophy we have ever lifted.

In all, the eight goals scored in this match helped us to an incredible 102 goals scored come the end of the season and promotion to the then third division.

This fantastic season also saw some of our highest attendences with around 12,000 averaged at every home match.

The game itself was as one-sided as the scoreline suggests and we were 1-0 up after just 12 seconds through Ken Hodgkisson. Although it took until just after the half hour for striker Colin Taylor to make it 2-0, the Saddlers were well on top.

The goals carried on coming in the second half with Roy Faulkner grabbing two and Taylor netting his second. With 15 minutes to play Taylor completed his hat-trick before two late strikes from John Davies rounded off an emphatic victory.

Colin Taylor went on to score just short of 200 goals for us during his 15 years at the club and clearly had a big role to play in our only title-winning season.

Lets hope we can make it two title wins this season. It looks difficult but you never know. An 8-0 victory tomorrow would be nice but after last week I think I’ll take one!
