Walsall 2 QPR 3 March 18 2000

Ok so you probably think I’ve gone mad. How can this be a memorable match when we lost and most people who weren’t there (and even some that were) can’t remember it?

Well this was a game memorable more for what happened after the 90 minutes than what happened during them. Last week I began wondering what happened to Walsall legend Siggi Eyjolfsson. It turns out that after leaving Walsall he joined Harelbeke in Belgium before going back to Iceland.
Since returning he has become Technical Director with the Icelandic FA.

The game against QPR was the final game Siggi played in a Walsall shirt and in all honesty it wasn’t a bad game!

Despite going 2-0 down within 15 minutes we fought back with goals from Tony Barras and one of the best goals I’ve seen at Bescot from new signing Paul Hall. It was his first goal for Walsall and seemed at the time to have helped us to a crucial point.

Unfortunately, Rangers scored again with only 15 minutes to go and even the final appearance of Siggi as a late sub couldn’t put us back on level terms.

As well as seeing the end of Siggi and the beginning of Paul Hall, this match also saw the beginning of the end of the Walsall career for one Michael Ricketts who was dropped from the squad for this game and left the club to join Bolton in July. Some were happier than others to see him go.

What are your memories of Siggi Eyjolfsson? Let us know on our forum.
