Arsenal 1 Walsall 2 29 November 1983

Possibly our best cup result outside of the FA Cup.

Prior to this fourth round Milk Cup match at Highbury the press and anyone else for that matter didn’t give the Saddlers a chance and despite having a strong campaign in Division 3 at the time, this wasn’t surprising.

In reaching the fourth round Walsall had dispatched of Blackpool (4-3 over 2 legs), Barnsley (3-0 over 2 legs) and Shrewsbury (2-1 at Fellows Park) but no one could really foresee us getting any kind of result at Highbury in front of 22,000 supporters on a cool November evening.

Arsenal didn’t take long to get going and took a first half lead that lasted for the majority of the game. But just as it looked like our cup run was at an end an equaliser came from Mark Rees.

As the our fans began planning for a replay at Fellows Park, a low cross into the 6-yard box found Ally Brown who slammed home past legendary Arsenal keeper Pat Jennings.

The result was another step towards our best ever cup run which was only ended in the semi-final by eventual winners Liverpool. This despite having held the Reds to a 2-2 draw at Anfield.

If you were at Highbury the night we beat the Gunners or you just have fond memories of that cup run let us know on our forum.
