Walsall boss Dean Smith has today ruled out a move for former Walsall player of the season, Anthony Gerrard.

Smith confirms he is still looking for a centre half but doesnt feel bringing Gerrard back to the club is the right approach to take as he looks to move forward.

Smith told the Express and Star

“I have spoken with Liam and felt he isn`t better than what we have already got – we have moved on from that,” the boss said.

“Whoever we bring in has got to be better than what we have got so we are still looking for a central defender.

“In terms of Anthony Gerrard I don`t think he is one we will go for. Anthony has been here before and a lot of people have worked with him here. I think it would be a backwards step for the club.

“It`s not that Anthony Gerrard can`t play at this level. I just think he has been here before and we want to move forward.”

Gerrard made one hundred and fifty five appearances for the Saddlers scoring seven goals.
