The Express and Star have stated that Jimmy Mullen has revealed that the club did reject a deadline day bid for wantaway defender Anthony Gerrard – from Championship club Southampton.

Interest has been rumoured to come from Coventry and Birmingham, but the Saints were the only ones in with a firm bid before the transfer window closed.

However the offer did not met the Saddlers valuation for Anthony, who is under contract at the Walsall until 2010, so the club rejected the approach – at last a strong approach.

The Express and Star quote Mullen as saying: “Anthony is our player. If he plays with same level of commitment and desire that he has shown throughout his time at Walsall Football Club, then he will continue to be a very valuable member of our squad.

Walsall chairman Jeff Bonser added: “I stated all along that the player would not be sold unless we received a substantial offer’

The rumours circulating on Saturday about a bid coming in from Reading have not been confirmed.
