Aside from the magnificent Erhun Oztumer, the development of Jason McCarthy from a timid looking centre-half to a bustling, all action, marauder-in-chief wing back is one of the highlights from an otherwise disappointing campaign.

Even the notion that McCarthy might return is scoffed at by most Walsall fans, with the majority believing he will continue his development on loan at a Championship club. Walsall manager Jon Whitney hasn’t given up hope of a dramatic return from McCarthy, just yet, but appreciates there will be a scramble for his signature.

Speaking to the Express & Star Whitney said “With Jason, if we are being honest, after the season he had he is going to have several offers.”

Whitney’s comments came during a discussion about the potential for Celtic defender Eoghan O’Connell to also return next season. The Irishman impressed in his time at the Banks’s and could make the switch permanently with his Celtic contract due to expire. Whitney admits that he’s hoping to bring both players back to the Banks’s…

“I still want them both.”

‘With Eoghan, Celtic are keeping their options open at the moment. Nothing has moved on that one yet. But I have registered my interest.”

Whilst McCarthy’s return seems unlikely, it wouldn’t be all too surprising if we did see O’Connell back in a Walsall shirt. Hopefully, it’s sorted out sooner rather than later as another turbulent summer could hinder any chance of a positive start to the season…
