Sunday Saddler Supplement

As BBC`s FL Show put it, the slump continues – no wins in four. A slightly worrying statistic at the business end of the season, but one that confirms that a top six finish is just short of a miracle. Yesterday`s 2-1 defeat in the capital to Orient has shown that issues need to be addressed as soon as June comes around – players need to go and players need to come in.
Unfortunately for me, its players like Darren Byfield and Alex Nicholls that have to prove their worth, otherwise their P45 will be handed to them before they can say mid-table finish. All in all, another disappointing mediocre season that has shown us a few moments of brilliance, but mostly nothingness and boredom.
I use the word boredom because it`s the same old thing due to the same old reasons that hold us back and stop us from going forward. Words such as ‘the budget is too small` often come from the soap boxes of the Bescot and to be honest, I find it rich sometimes when you hear money is going on pointless advertising signs that no-one could care for (especially when you`re a football club!). But enough moaning….
I like Hutch as a manager, I think he tells it like it is, goes with what he`s got and sometimes get`s it. The signing of Julian Gray shows that he can twist the arm of Bonser, but we need more players with proven pedigree – Carlisle have got Ian Harte, a brilliant signing! More ambition is being shown as well in trying to sign Lee Hendrie from Derby, but even Hutch admitted that financial constraints have halted such a move for the type of player we need at the club. Personally for me, all we need is a creative midfielder and a hard-working striker who knows where the old onion bag is (another Jorge).
Until we can invest in some good League One talent, the future is not so good. It worries me that a club like Grimsby can be in the Championship and within a few years battling to stay in the Football League. And Man United think they have issues!

P.S. RIP Tony Richards – gone but not forgotten
