Thoughts on our first Summer Signing

|

Walsall today made their first signing of the summer, George Nurse. Nurse has signed on a season-long loan from Bristol City. So what’s our take on the Saddlers latest recruit.

Nurse is 21 years old, and has already had a loan spell in League Two, with Newport County. I am happy to see that we have taken a player that already knows what the league is about, and the standard that will be required from him, rather than a player that uses us as the club to get him used to professional competitive football.

He is an adaptable player, who can play at Left-Back, and Left Wing-Back, as well as being able to fit in midfield too. He reminds me of Pring, a left sided, attacking minded wing back. I am not surprised to see that Clarke has recruited someone who can play in multiple positions. It also brings about the option to play a back 4, or play with wing backs and a central 3. Callum Cockerill-Mollett, isn’t the type of defender to play as a wing-back, so I am glad that we have someone that gives us that flexibility.

So what does this mean for CCM. It means he has to once again, prove his worth, and hold down his first team spot. He will have to make sure he is training and playing well, because Nurse is a very capable player, who has actually played more football league matches than CCM. We could also see both playing together, as CCM has been touted as a left sided centre back.

We all like to see permanent signings, but I think loans will be the way forward given the financial state in football. We also have built a solid link with Bristol City, with Pring and Holden giving glowing reviews, which aided Nurse’s decision to join us. This has to be a good thing. Having a good relation with a bigger club will be key for us. Being able to sign players on loan, who have heard positive things from other players, and without the cost of their full wages (hopefully) can only help when planning future transfer activity.

Overall, I am pleased to see Nurse come through the door. He is an exciting prospect who will get forward, much like Pring, and give his all for the shirt.

Can’t see pring returning now that we have a similar player. I don’t know too much about Nurse, but all the signs are there that he could be good for us. Would love Holden back!
