After a very good Christmas, we said our grace and started the New Year with a five point cushion at the top of League 2. But, is it going to be that simple?

Hopefully yes. Why not? Chelsea have done it the last two seasons in the Premiership, so did Reading in the Championship, and so did Southend in League 1. Why not Walsall? Having said that, we do have some teams trying to bang our five point door down. They nearly unscrewed the hinges last Saturday, but we managed to seal the doorway with no more nails, ha ha! I am talking about teams like MK Dons, Swindon, Lincoln, and Wycombe – the only Football League team left in the Carling Cup out of four teams, not bad really.

Out of all the teams, MK Dons seem to have the most steam with a string of impressive results, despite losing to another team in the running, Swindon Town. They have also claimed to be a threat, especially when they beat Walsall 2-0 at the Bescot. With a striker like Lee Peacock, someone that even Paul Merson tried to sign for his Walsall side, surprisingly, Town are always going to be a threat, especially in a league where the sliding tackle is king. Which takes me onto Lincoln City, who have someone upfront who is a typical case of footballing sods law. Jamie Forrester. The former-Saddler is out for more goals, after notching up four hat tricks so far this season. Not bad I suppose! The good news with Lincoln is that their manager, John Schofield, won the manager of the month award back in October, which meant that the Imps went on a losing streak. He is due to win it again this Thursday, so they may no longer be a threat for the next month or so. And lastly, Wycombe Wanderers, a side with another talisman that Walsall should take note from. Jamie Easter is going to be a target for the big clubs, as he is hot property with his free-scoring antics.

However, the biggest threat to Walsall will be MK Dons, as they have the manager in Martin Allen and the team, with Izale McLeod scoring goals to make sure that Walsall have someone behind them all the way to the finishing line in May.
