Two down! Four to go?

Earlier this week, Walsall confirmed their second summer signing, with the return of Rory Holden on a permanent transfer to the club. This, coupled with George Nurse in on loan, means that we are only four players away from a completed squad, in my opinion.

First and foremost, we are still missing a goalkeeper to push Roberts. No team can go into the season with only one senior goalkeeper, and feel comfortable about it. Given the climate, and DC’s comments about having to utilise the loan market, I would expect this second keeper to be a loanee. Roberts needs someone to push him, and keep his place in the side always in the open. I feel Rose did that to an extent, and coupled with Maik Taylor as the GK coach, we saw an improvement in Roberts. But having someone there to put his position reslly under threat would help Roberts grow further.

The next three are from what DC said at the Q and A night with fans. He stated that he wants an attacking minded Right-Back, and I think that this signing will be a similar type of player to George Nurse, and will give us the option of playing with a defensive 3, with wing-backs, a system that Clarke tried last season. I feel that Norman isn’t that type of defender, and it wouldn’t be getting the best out of him by playing him as a wing-back, so someone to play that role is important, as this is a system that the squad looks to be leaning towards.

Keeping on the right hand side, we need a right-winger. For me, Jack Nolan was a very good signing, and a player that I think will grow and develop well, but I think it is too early to play him as the starting choice. A right winger, that compliments Wes, and gives teams two wide threats to worry about, would be a very welcome addition, and one that all us fans are eagerly anticipating. It wasn’t difficult to for teams to predict the type of build up play we would use, with someone like Wes in the team. Throw in someone who can do the same, but on the opposite side, and we could start to really give teams a headache.

Finally, DC is after a target man, to rival and push Adebayo. Personally, I like our front three, and I feel that they started to really combine well last season, but outside of these three, we have no-one else. With Candlin being released, and Luke Pearce moving to Southampton on a compensation deal, we don’t have another back-up. I am not sure whether I want to see someone young and hungry, or someone a bit older who can add some experience up top, but I think that, given the shorter season, we do need that extra depth up top, and a target man would add something different in games where we aren’t breaking teams down.

So these are a mixture of positions that I think we need to recruit in, and where DC said he feels needs addressing too. Do you agree? Are there any other positions you think we need to fill? Let me know in the comments.

Definitely need a goalkeeper in my apnion and an experience winger and possibly a striker just in case of injuries as there gonna be Saturday Tuesday games and there’s gonna be an early carabo cup game as well before the season starts

Spot on, I think we need cover up top with our 2 young players leaving the club. With around 11 midweek games (before progression in the cup) we need it.
