The Saddlers secured all three points last night against fellow strugglers Dagenham and Redbridge.
Walsall made typical hardwork in their quest for the truimph and the winning goal came from Will Grigg, who scored his first goal at home.
The Daggers struggled throughout and Walsall was always on the front foot, they created lots of chances with Macken excellent but couldn’t quite put the ball away.
Macken had a good chance in the opening stages but failed to get his shots on target. With an active and strong midfield,Richard Taundry set the ball up nicely for Matthew Richards but he failed to get his into the right position to score.
Macken then fed to Julian Gray and then to Aaron Lescott, but the leftback fired over.
Julian Gray then blasted down the pitch to link up with Matthew Richards, but the chance came to nothing.
Half Time came and it was frustrating that Walsall were not ahead, but were firmly in charge of the game.
Alex Nicholls pushed forward as the second half opened with another chance for Macken, but the Daggers goalkeeper was on hand to save the danger.
Walsall showed no let up of their pressure to the visiting side as in-form Gray showed his skill and passed to Alex Nicholls, however he missed the opportunity and blazed over the bar.
The breakthrough came on 81 minutes when Walsall took their deserving lead. The instrumental Jon Macken set up substitute Will Grigg who made no mistake of putting a fine strike into the back of the net. At Last! 1-0
In the closing stages, Walsall and Dagenham had chances to score, the home side through the pacy Julian Gray whose attempt went wide.
At the other end, it took Lescott to make a clearance from a Marvin Morgan chance.
The whistle blew and 3 points were Walsall’s and relief rang around the Banks’s.
It’s another 3 points and edge towards safety for the Saddlers. Gray, Richards and Macken, who was awarded Man Of The Match, all stood out as Walsall develop as a team
It was a shame to see close to 1,000 less supporters in attendence than who witnessed Saturday’s defeat to Bournemouth, despite the value for money link up offer. They missed a big win and only the fifth home win of the season!
We now look towards Saturday’s visit to high flying Colchester United!
