Tuesday 12th December 1995 – FA Cup

After a forgettable 1-1 draw at Plainmoor the replay at Bescot was set to be another cagey, lacklustre game….how wrong could we be!

Ooh aah Chrissy Marsh put the Saddlers ahead with a fine strike.
Mark Hawthorne equalised for Torquay soon after. Just after half-time, Lee Barrow headed them in front. Kevin Wilson`s header levelled things up again but yet another header, from Ian Gore, left goalkeeper Jimmy Walker helpless and Walsall entered the final quarter of the match with their FA Cup run in big jeopardy.

A spectacular goal from Darren Bradley, his first for the Saddlers, made it 3-3 and with the game approaching extra time Torquay hit the post, the ball rolled across the goal line, then hit the other post and somehow managed to stay out.

Walsall 3-3 Torquay (extra time to be played)

The next 30 minutes were probably the most bizarre and entertaining 30 minutes that Bescot has ever witnessed.

Three minutes into the extra period, Chrissy Marsh volleyed us back in front, Kyle Lightbourne quickly made it 5-3 then on 98 minutes, Marshy set up Martin O`Connor to make it 6-3.

3 goals in the first 8 minutes of extra time had put this game to bed but how crazy this match was anything could have happened.

Jose Mateu gave Torquay a glimmer of hope to make it 6-4 but a brilliant solo goal from Scotty Houghton made it 7-4 to Walsall before half time of extra time. What an unbelievable 15 minutes it had been, truly unbelievable.

The second half of extra time only produced a measly one goal as Kyle Lightbourne scrambled home his second of the night and Walsall`s eighth.

The brave souls who actually made it to Bescot on that cold December night will have a memory that they will never forget.

What are your cup memories?? We could possibly use them this week…..
