Walsall smooth out Silkmen

It was always going to be hard to repeat the highs of tuesday night. If fact it was always going to be doubtful that Macclesfield could play as bad as Peterborough did anyway. That is how it exactly panned out. Having survived an even first ten minutes Walsall were on top for the majority of the first half, but in the second Macclesfield showed there team spirit to throw the kitchen sink at us. To be fair the defence held quite solid and limited Clayton Ince to only one ‘real’ save. Also since the Silkman were restricted to shooting mainly from distance they gave the impression that they couldn’t hit a barn at point blank range let alone score. If it was on effort and determination Macclesfield wouldn’t be bottom but since goals win matches it is easy to see why they are.

Clayton Ince, did what he had to do well, one poor kick one fluffed cross but all in all it didn’t cost us anything so no problems.

The defence with Craig Pead in place of the suspended Gerrard held up well against a direct style and the height of McNeil and the nippy Forest loanee Spencer Weir-Daley. Roper started a bit poorley with him been thankful for Westwood covering him after he was beaten to a couple of headers. In fact Westwood had his best game at centre half since he came to the club, if he had started his career in the same fashion he would not be subject of the boo boys.

The midfield, Mark Wright continued his rich vein of form on the right with Daniel Fox growing into his new role, last tuesdays goal giving him confidence. Dean Keates and Dobbo had the usual hard working performance, although Dobbo in mymind hasn’r shown the form of his first two games, he looks a better player alongside Kinsella.

Pre match we asked or should I have said prayed for a Hector Sam goal, he finally delivered along with a man of the match performance. Hopefully now the blue touch paper has been lite and more will follow. Martin Butler was super again today, his importance to the saddlers was underlinned when he went down injured and the whole ground held its breath.

Scott Dann, is trying hard to become the Saddlers super sub, scoring after 5 minutes of coming on, not with his first touch like the Plymouth game though. Alan Picken returned to action in his first game since the opening day and after a little while to adjust then showed that Gerrard may have a hard task to regain his place.

All in all job done, not with any style or cutting football just with organisation and efficency, thats how wining teams are built.
