Walsall v Chesterfield: Match Report
This weekend approaching the Banks’ Stadium you could almost feel the tension, as the battle to stay in League one builds to a dramatic climax once again.
Walsall took full advantage (albeit in typically non simple fashion) to extend their safety gap to four points, with an exciting win I’ve the Spireites.
The Saddlers started well building pressure early yet without creating to much, Sam Mantom firing wide early on.
Chesterfield looked very much the team struggling for their lives as they began to build into the game, forcing David Grof into a couple of decent saves as the game opened up.
Twenty minutes in some sloppy play from the Saddlers’ defence let in Spireite Moussa to put Chesterfield into a deserved lead and give Walsall the kick that we really didn’t want!
Just four minutes later however, some good build up play from Jon Macken saw him tee up the again hungry looking Ledesma who scored an equaliser with a lively finish.
Walsall began to take control, Kevan Hurst going close a couple of times before Ledesma completed the turn around and put us into the lead!
The ever dangerous Ledesma and Cuvelier linking up sublimely together, and Ledesma pile driving an effort in the Chesterfield net, a lovely finish but question marks over Spireites goalkeeper Tommy Lee though.

Second half Chesterfield came out hunting an equaliser and Walsall did well to keep them at bay until the 55 minute mark, Butler slipped under pressure allowing Randall in on goal who duly beat Grof to put the away side level.
The two sides manage to stay level for a grand total of another four minutes, with some good build up again, this time ending with impressive loanee Sam Mantom putting Walsall back into the lead.
Walsall began to slow the game up, yet still seeme unable to keep Chestefield off the ball, although Alex Nicholls did go close, before Dean Smith made his first change, Macken coming on for Paterson.
A tense end to the game in prospect, it was good to see Adam Chambers get a return to the fray in place of Hurst, as both teams battled for possession and Chesterfield looking very nervy and desperate to get something from the game, but it wasn’t to be as Walsall saw out the remainder of the game for a nerve wracking yet well earned three points.
A massive three points, all but condemning Chesterfield to relegation, and strengthening our claims to a League one spot somewhat more, made all the more important by the fact that we face a tough away tie at Charlton on Monday.
