Walsall’s away day worries

Despite the fact we are sitting two points clear at the top of the table friday nights performance once again did little to settle the nerves of some of the Bescot faithful.

Our season so far has been under pinned by our home form, a fantastic six wins from six with no goals against. Away from home wins at Rochdale and Bristol Rovers have been joined by average if not poor performances at Shrewsbury, Barnet, Lincoln and now Chester where we have failed to play the football needed to pick up three points. However much could be said that at least our battling qualities have allowed us to come away with draws at these venues.

Whilst we have not dropped to the deepth of dismal performances as that one dished out at Grimsby and first half at Lincoln. At Chester we battled hard against a determined Chester side and against the conditions which certainly didn’t suit our game plan. However just as we could have won it a disallowed goal and a teriffic save from our debutant keeper saved the day.

So what is the answer, do we have the right type of players to dig out away results?, the answer is yes two wins four draws and only one defeat shows we have the capability but we need to turn draws into wins.

Do we have the right tactics? well we do tend to fall back a bit too deep for my liking. A point DD has also acknowledged so I would imagine will be addressed. However I do feel in some ways we have the mentality to not lose where it maybe an idea to try and win!

This touches on the point I feel that still lingers at Bescot, over the past few seasons we have found away points hard to come by. It was difficult to buy an away win in the championship, things didn’t get much better under the Merse and some right hammerings have left a scar. Not until this mental scar is healed will we gon away from home full of confidence.

Of course this month is the real acid test of our promotion potential, home games against Wycombe and a MK Dons team which always seems to do well at Bescot will put our home record to the test. As will a stern examination at Accrington Stanley who have moved into the top ten on the back of there our home form. If we don’t pick up max points from the Wycombe game not only will we no longer be top (as Wycombe will leap frog us) we will have put pressure on ourselves to get a result out of the Accrington game.
