Deadline day approaches where do we strengthen, that is the burning question. With only 1% of Saddlers fans feeling we are fine in all areas. This is compared to a massive 28% that want to see reinforcements come into all areas, defence, midfield and attack. In fact it is the lack of a killer touch in recent games that has prompted a 57% of fans wanting to see striking reinforcements in a Walsall shirt. Whilst the creative midfielder arguement still has some fans (14%)wanting midfield and upfront strengthening.

So what are the chances, well in defence I can’t see anyone else coming in. We have Alan Picken who the club feel will be able to take some part. Also Matt Carbon whilst still regaining fitness according to the club may well sign up on a non contract basis as extra cover. Also don’t forget the forgotten right back Geordie Lyall who has been here since January without breaking into the first team.

In midfield, well we have just signed Kevin Harper on loan to the end of the season. We are led to believe from the club that Kevin Cooper is in advance st
ages about extending his loan, so that leaves central midfield. DD seems to like combative central midfielders whilst most Saddlers want a creative player who will unlock a stubbon defence…..but who is available again this type of player is in demand by most clubs unless DD and Paul Taylor can pull a rabbit out of a hat we may not see a first teamer come into the club.

Now for forwards, DD has tried already to bring in another forward. Lee Mathews from Crewe was the name put forward. Lets face it any club would want a striker who will score the goals to keep them up or send them up. However what type of striker are we after. Upfront we lack pace, we could also put an arguement forward for an Brett Angel Andy Rammell type striker. The problem once again is down to what are the options well it is either a player who is out of contract in the summer and has been sittin in the reserves, or a player trying to regain fitness by going out on loan. The last option is a promising young kid from a top flight club….but lacks experience. In any case there is draw backs. DD it is up to you.

The other problem is dealing with the rest of the squad. What message does it send to the remaining players if a bunch of footballing mercenaries come in….remember management by Paul Merson.

In the end of the day we are just going to have to trust DD, AND BACK THE LADS.
